Abdullah bin Mas\u00b4ood <sup>RA<\/sup> was amongst those few. He was one of the five companions of the Nabi <sup>SA<\/sup> who were distinctively knows as the Shi\u00b4ah (followers) of Maulana Ali <sup>SA<\/sup> even during the era of Rasulullah<sup>SAW<\/sup>. He would call them so and openly recount their virtues.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Abdullah bin Mas\u00b4ood\u2019s <sup>RA<\/sup> name is also mentioned amongst those distinguished for their austerity and knowledge. What makes him stand out among others is his knowledge of al-Quran and its recitation. One day Rasulullah <sup>SAW<\/sup> instructed him to recite the Quran. Abdullah <sup>RA<\/sup> replied, a little surprised, \u201cO Rasulullah, the Quran is revealed to you and you want me to recite for you?\u201d To which Rasulullah <sup>SAW<\/sup> replied, \u201cYes, I like to hear the Quran recited by others. Abdullah <sup>RA<\/sup> started reciting Surah al-Nisaa\u2019 (the fourth surah in al Quran) till he reached the ayah, \u201c<em>if we brought from each people a witness, and we brought thee as a witness over these people!\u201d <\/em>Rasulullah <sup>SAW<\/sup> told him to stop there. When Abdullah<sup>RA<\/sup> turned towards Rasulullah<sup>SAW<\/sup> he saw both his eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah bin Mas\u00b4ood <sup>RA<\/sup> said, \u201cI recited 70 Surahs of al-Quran in the presence of Rasulullah <sup>SAW<\/sup> and completed the remainder in the presence of the noblest of all after him: Ali bin Abi Talib <sup>SA<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In his later years, whilst in Kufa, Abdullah bin Mas\u00b4ood <sup>RA<\/sup> came to know of the excesses of the usurping regime. He made people aware of the decadence of religious practices. When the message spread, Kufa\u2019s governor Waleed privately told him to either refrain from spreading such comments or to leave the city. Abdullah <sup>RA<\/sup> replied, \u201cI will not stop from saying the truth.\u201d Ultimately, Abdullah <sup>RA<\/sup> chose to leave Kufa and journey to Medina, where he passed away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Rasulullah SAW initially called towards Islam, a handful of people embraced the faith.
